This mural project was the brainchild of Shoals Art teacher, Linda Sherfick, who wrote numerous grants and held fundraisers to bring this project to fruition. The mural is painted on the side of the school building that faces a courtyard outside of the lunchroom. The themes that are visually represented include; local Martin County, Indiana landmarks, local history and heritage (Abe Lincoln spent his childhood in the area), encouraging studious endeavor’s, creativity, personal growth, completing an education and looking down the road to a bright future etc. Junior high and high school students posed for the figures in the mural. A young Abe Lincoln stands larger than life as a role model for literacy. Several local artists and art instructors assisted in the mural painting process and also helped mentor student painters.
